Project outline
The Carmichael Rail Network consisted of 190 km of railway line connecting the Carmichael Mine to the Abbots Point port facilities. The mine is located in Queensland.

Scope of works:

Our scope of works consisted of the on-site production of 8,000 tonnes of Z600 Stilcor CSP culverts, ranging in diameter from 600 to 2,700mm. Three pipe mills were deployed on-site simultaneously to service all sections of the project. Originally scheduled for completion in 10-12 months, the works were accelerated and completed in six months without incident.

The project is believed to have been the single largest on-site culvert project carried out in Australia, with our teams regularly producing in excess of 150tonnes of CSP culverts per day.

The steel materials were imported on dedicated ships carrying 3,000 – 3,500 tonnes per shipment, directly into the port of Townsville. The manufacture of the culverts was to AS / NZS2041.4 standards.

The project brings the total tonnage for on-site manufacture by Roundel to 40,000 tonnes, a volume unmatched by others.

Roundel also desiged & manufactured the CHPP Stockpile Reclaim & Escape tunnels required on the project, using our B200 bolted, corrugated steel arches, manufactured in Townsville. Roundel is the only Australian company offering the design & manufacture of corrugated metal pipes, and bolted, corrugated metal structures, operating nationally.
